Should Vegans Empathize With Meat-Eaters?
What if the most effective way to talk to people about veganism wasn’t to aggressively dominate them with facts, figures, and logical deconstructions of their objections-but rather to patiently listen to, empathize with, and even validate them? In this video, we explore effective strategies for constructive communication about veganism, like validating core values and subverting stereotypes. And I make perhaps my most controversial call to action: stop trying to make people vegan.

Bite Size Vegan aims to serve as an “entry point” for non-vegans to explore veganism in an approachable, non-threatening environment-distilling down complex concepts into accessible formats while providing cited sources for total transparency and to allow further independent research and evaluation.
By taking on the ample time requirements of researching the myriad of issues inherent within and surrounding veganism, as well as sorting through the ever-growing mountains of information, Emily Moran Barwick aims to increase both the accessibility of veganism for non-vegans, and the efficiency and effectiveness of current vegans’ activism.

Why Vegans WON'T Tell You They're Vegan
Переглядів 17 тис.7 місяців тому
You may have heard some variation of the joke "How do you know someone’s vegan? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you!" Ironically, this joke captures one of the reasons many-if not most-vegans actually WON'T tell you they’re vegan. In contrast to the stereotype that "vegans talk about veganism all the time," many vegans put great effort into NOT talking about veganism at all! In this video, we not onl...

I'm the only vegan I know. The worst harassment I've experienced was a woman telling me I was gay for being vegan. She also poked fun at me occasionally hinting that I wasn't a "Real Man" .The same girl was very liberal and had a gay best friend. Odd. I wasn't very upset. People only reveal themselves when they speak in such a way. My idea of masculinity, or just being a good person, is doing the right thing even if it means you walk alone against the herd.

I think this is a pretty simple question. Basically, we DON'T, until they start hating on us because we don't make all the same choices they do. I want to be careful to be clear that no "blanket" statement about "all vegans" is possible - no such statement about ANY group is really possible - but there is a large complement of vegans that are judgmental and abusive in "lifestyle" conversations, coming off as though any of us who eat meat and so on are evil in some sense. When you attack people like that, how do you EXPECT them to react to you? I'm basically a live and let live kind of guy, and ultimately I don't CARE how a person chooses to get their nutrition. But I expect and demand the same tolerance in return, and if I don't get it it can indeed rile me up. That said, I truly hope I'm never guilty of being less than wholly respectful and accepting toward someone merely because "they're vegan" - I really don't want to fall into that "group think" trap.

Definitely the superiority purity thing thing. For example I’ve seen former vegans saying “I was vegan for x number of years … blah blah…” Then one of the ‘True’ Vegans comes along and retorts “You were NEVER a vegan. It’s a permanent spiritual change. Blah, blah, I’m superior, blah blah” really condescending and no one I’d like to know. However, I get most of you aren’t that bad. 😁

The argument about gradients of cruelty makes me think about puppy mills, dog fighting, or horses left to suffer. Anytime captivity is legal, there is abuse and also extreme cruelty. The pushback by greedy food producers to make these laws impotent only shows how much ending factory farms scares these people. Eating animals is not financially viable anymore without extreme abuse. Also, the horrors we allow ourselves to inflict on animals seems to always inspire evil people to do the same things to human beings, similar to how we test stuff on monkeys. Just my opinion. We cannot allow this cruelty a safe space. We should also eat vegan.

thats not how you kill animal in an halal way they need to stand up or lie down not spin and after that cut the throat when the animal is relaxing that way its an easy death after a 1-3 sec because loss of blood the animal will lose its life you NEED to hit the juglear vines if all of these steps are not done the animal is not permitted to be eaten and i agree with you that there are some people mistreating the animals and i hate them too but islam never said that nor dit it say to chakle them up

we didn’t have this level of cognitive dissonance when we were integrated with our food production. veganism has been growing during a time when we’ve lost ownership and buy-in to producing food, and i don’t get the sense that many vegans have first-hand experience with farming or animal husbandry. the increase in vegan and vegetarianism has grown with this change.

The "science" why vegan is no sulution is that it has been pushed by those who exploit the world most. The shareholders of nutrifictaion industry, you grant them the steady rising dividend they expect. And some mindless even play and propagate to play broker games in the web. Vegan has become a label and doesn't helps, it makes all worse, what would help is to buy only local products to bypass the speculators in the chain. And it won't matter potatoes or beef, because it would spare us the useless overproduction which is only for good of the speculators and if we eat this or not doesn't even matters they make profit as soon that is offered to the end consumer, you dont' have to buy it. To buy local products would break the power of the nutrifiacation industry, to buy their products grants the speculators even a higer rendite and makes them only more powerful. I'm not the tight minded, i'm one who thinks even more as just twice about a problem. *It's up to you how you nutrify yourself, i only say buy local no matter what*

I don't think we need to be riding horses... but we do need to eat. And even plants have consciousness ... trees communicate through roots mushrooms and smells in forests, plants sense danger and fear. It may be different or less painful than animals, but i don't think eating chicken eggs is morally worse or much different than eating pollen on an edible flower. Infact the plant might feel it more than the chicken if you take the whole flower vs taking a chicken's unfertilized egg. We don't really need to eat meat however a lot of people like myself are not fully educated on what foods they need to eat and where to get them so they can still get enough protein in their diet. We clearly don't need to ride horses though and this video is inspiring me to want to buy a horse and their baby to let them roam free on a big piece of land... i need land and horse money or the fall of capitalism first though but the ideas there

The way I would question this is to ask; is all riding of animals "use"? For example, let's say you had a close bond with the elephant and you climbed on top of the elephant. Are you using the elephant if they walk around? I'm not sure I agree with framing any riding of animals as "using". If you stick tack on them and force them where to go than sure. But I feel like riding an animal can be non-exploitative.

Once certain folks find out I'm vegan they ensue with mocking/questioning what I'm eating. It's childish. I would never harass others about what's on their plate, and they only know I'm vegan when they see my food and ask what it is and/or why I'm not eating the pizza, BBQ, etc. This notion that vegans go around telling everyone they're vegan is actually vegan folks responding to questions about what they're eating/not eating rather than vegans arbitrarily telling people "I'm vegan". When they press me about my choice to be vegan, I tell them about the horror and abuse animals suffer and that I want no part of it. My advice to non-vegans who don't want to hear about the animal abuse and horrific suffering, don't ask questions that you don't want the answers to.

I’ll tell them without anger, but I’ll tell them straight. They don’t need me as a friend. They need me to respect them enough to imagine that they might have enough goodness in them to consider changing when they realise what they’re doing

But, a) do they not already know?, b) does it work?, and c) do you speak to people at different levels, e.g. children from an adult? (People's minds are at different levels). One of the biggest weakness of the vegan movement is the lack of data for what works &, especially, the lack of data what does not work, i.e. that calculates the amount of counter-productive or damaging affect "advocacy" has.

Great conversation Emily. It really organizes well thought that I had myself. To me, an important point for dealing with this issue is the fact that I used to be like the rest. Not only that, but I am still the same guy. So, I don’t reject neither who nor how I was before- I’m at peace with that, and this is a good point of departure to connect well with people. Of course, also, like you say, I made the decision on my own, with no pressure, and it took the time took, so, tempting as it may be, I don’t try to accelerate it in others. I also remind myself that all the vegan arguments in the world can be reduced to 4 words:” it is not necessary”. I say it sometimes and leave it there.

I like veganism, but I don't like the double standards some vegans have in "pretending" they don't know nonveganism is like when they've been one. So I don't get how vegans don't relate with nonvegans. Vegans have to understand many nonvegans are naive. Even if you tell them some info people can't and shouldn't just blindly believe anything. They're still naive if it's really true and need to do more research. When some vegans or activists do extreme and crazy things that make the movement look so bad I question if they truly care about veganism.

Hey guys, I need some advice. I've been a vegan for over a year now and I think I'm really struggling with the fact how many people still eat meat and don't give a damn about animals suffering. Even when I try to talk with some of my family or friends it's the standard "but that's just how the world is", "but humans are meat eaters", "oh stop, you've probably read some bs on the internet" or downright saying they love meat too much to give up eating it. It's like they are so obsessed with eating meat that even knowing perfectly well that an animal had to die for this, they completely ignore it, pretend that animals don't feel, naively choosing complete denial just so they can keep enjoying a burger. Whenever I see a meat shop that has a picture of a happy pig on it I feel like that's literally one of the most f**ked up and disturbing things I've seen, Like what's that supposed to mean, an animal was happy to die just so you can have a 5 minute pleasure you could completely live without? Family dinners are a struggle, going to buy groceries and seeing so many corpses proudly displayed is too etc. I don't know guys, I've noticed that I find it harder and harder to cope with this, many days I find it impossible to foucs on simple tasks thinking of it all. And don't worry, I don't plan to go no-vegan, but I really need some advice from people who've been through something similar because it's been really bad for my mental health.

I'm sorry but this isn't going to be deep. It sounds like you need to focus your mind on other things, engage in other positive, pleasurable, & grounding experiences. Here's the thing; what you're describing is the way it is. That's the way it's going to be, probably for the whole of your life. There's really little you can do to wake people up, until they are ready on their own account. It's not a "war" that's going to be won in a couple of years. It's more likely going to take 100 or 150 years, so pace yourself, & even then it's still a 50/50 toss up between humanity becoming plant based or destroying itself. Working on refining yourself. Especially, work on becoming as powerful & influential as you can. Don't throwaway your life on the frontlines, & burn out. Sure, it'll all tough you up a bit, but you'll need that too. You just need a bit of focus & mind control, & may be to hang out with other people.

I have watched your channel for years even though I’m not vegan (mainly because my ARFID make cutting out large groups of food nearly impossible). But I do agree with a lot of your points and I limit animal exploitation as much as I can. I know most vegans would call me lazy and selfish and say I’m making excuses but the reality is we all can only do what we can do. We all have to prioritize and my mental and physical health has to come before the abstract goal of not buying animal products.

What about being vegan away from the crowd and being vegetarian/eating meat occasionally publicly.

You don't need to cut out large groups of food. You only need to cut a small group; meat, dairy & eggs. Yeah, it sounds like an excuse. And it's hardly an "abstract" goal for the animals.
